Access to Dental Care for Children

Organizations concerned with oral health:

  • Access to Baby & Child Dentistry (ABCD) focuses on preventive and restorative dental care for Medicaid-eligible children from birth to age six, with emphasis on enrollment by age one.  It is based upon the premise that starting dental visits early will yield positive behaviors by both parents and children, thereby helping to control the caries process and reduce the need for costly future restorative work.
  • Washington Dental Service Foundation is the state's largest foundation dedicated to improving oral health.  As community advocates for oral health, WDS Foundation is working to make certain that prevention and early treatment of oral disease are community priorities.
  • National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion--Oral Health Resources is part of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC).  It is the federal agency with primary responsibility for supporting state-and community-based programs to prevent oral disease, promoting oral health nationwide, and fostering applied research to enhance oral disease prevention in community settings.
  • American Dental Hygienists' Association provides tips on brushing, flossing, and children's oral health.
  • Oral Health America develops, implements, and facilitates education and service programs designed to raise awareness of oral health's importance to total health.

Smile Survey 2005 is an oral health assessment conducted by the Washington State Department of Health on preschool, elementary school, and Native American children.

Oral Health in America: A Report of the Surgeon General is a call to action to promote access to oral health for all Americans, especially the disadvantaged and minority children found to be at greatest risk for severe medical complications resulting from minimal oral care and treatment.
