Foreclosure Deskbook for Washington Judges

One of the most significant effects of the recession on Washington courts is the rise in home foreclosures. According to the Tacoma News Tribune, the Seattle-Tacoma-Bellevue corridor saw a 23 percent increase in foreclosures last year above and beyond the historic spike in 2009. Since the housing bubble burst, advocates have been hard at work on behalf of both consumers and lenders. During the same timeframe, Washington State Courts have been faced with a changing landscape of foreclosure laws and a lack of impartial and holistic resources for the bench. Washington Appleseed has assembled a balanced team to author a comprehensive resource for state judges.

How Washington Appleseed is Helping

Foreclosure sign in front of home Washington Appleseed is spearheading a collaborative effort to author a deskbook to address some of the ripple effects of the rise in foreclosures. Currently in the outline phase, the resource will include valuable information on the changing landscape of foreclosure policy and provide detailed information on topics from summaries of foreclosure procedures used in Washington (nonjudicial deed of trust foreclosures, judicial foreclosures and forfeiture of real estate contracts) to the securitization of home loans.

Focused on providing objective, in-depth information, the deskbook is envisioned as a free resource available across the state.
