The Need for a Medical-Legal Partnership

A medical crisis has a way of touching all aspects of our lives, not just our health. The increased financial demand of medical services can have a damaging effect on a family's finances, right at the moment when they need the most stability. Gaining access to care can be complicated by a family's immigration status and a host of other issues. While most hospitals have social workers on staff to help patients and families access public benefits and maximize healthcare, many of the legal issues facing low-income families require more specific expertise from trained attorneys.

Seattle Children’s Hospital received a three-year grant in the amount of $380,000 from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation® to implement the Medical-Legal Partnership for Children (MLPC).
