Access to Education
The Washington State Constitution guarantees children in Washington with the right to education. Despite being the strongest mandate for education in the country, students on long-term suspension or expulsion from school still fall into an educational gray area. Often, these students go for long periods of time (sometimes for days, weeks, months, or even longer) without access to educational services. These disruptions in a student’s education play a role in the dropout crisis in Washington.
How Washington Appleseed is Helping

Washington Appleseed has teamed up with Seattle law firm Garvey Schubert & Barer, The ACLU of Washington and TeamChild to ask big questions and find real answers to the missing pieces of Washington’s educational puzzle. Through public disclosure requests, legal research, and policy advocacy, our project team will gather data about what educational opportunities are currently available for suspended and expelled students, and work to ensure that the constitutional mandate of the right to an education is provided to all Washington’s students.
