Sue Donaldson, Executive Director

Attorney and Former Public Official Sue Donaldson is the founder and executive director of the Washington Appleseed Center for Law in the Public Interest. This position allows her to combine her love of progressive public policy with the practice of law. Sue served on the Seattle City Council for 10 years, including one term as Council president. During the past six years, she has taught at the University of Washington Daniel J. Evans School of Public Affairs and as the Law School Harold S. Shefelman Distinguished Lecturer. She was named the Betty Jane Narver Memorial Lecturer for 2005 by the Evans School. Her article, "Outside, Looking In: Female Leadership in Wendy Wasserstein's An American Daughter," was published in the journal, Public Integrity, Summer 2006 issue. She received an A.B. magna cum laude from Harvard-Radcliffe College and a J.D. from the University of Washington School of Law.

Director Susan Carpenter manages operations and administration for Washington
Appleseed. Her professional experience
as a director of human resource management encompasses performance coaching and
evaluation, staffing and recruitment, diversity and inclusion, benefit plan
design and communications, compensation systems, and human resource training. She is a board member of the Seattle
International District Rotary Club and Seattle Young Artists Music Festival and
serves as a mentor for Seattle
Public High
School students.
She holds a B.A. in Sociology from the University of Washington.
Barbara Schaad-Lamphere, Senior Fellow

Barbara Schaad-Lamphere is a Senior Fellow at Washington Appleseed working in the areas of education and local governance accountability. Barbara has been active in public education issues in Seattle for 20 years. She served eight years on the Seattle School Board, including three as Board President. Over the past three years, Barbara has worked as a fundraiser for three education issue campaigns and led a group of Seattle leaders looking at school governance issues. Barbara has served on the boards of the Council of Great City Schools, Washington School Directors Association, Schools First, and various PTAs. She holds a B.S. in Psychology from the University of Washington.
Diana Stone, Senior Fellow

Attorney Diana Stone is Senior Fellow at Washington Appleseed, working in the areas of education, children, and low-income self-sufficiency. She has served on the Scholastic National Customer Advisory Board, Madison Children's Museum Board, and Seattle's First Book Board. As an attorney, Ms. Stone was a litigator at Lawton & Cates, S.C. in Madison, Wisconsin, practicing in the area of employment discrimination and personal injury law. Previously, Ms. Stone served as a legal aid attorney in California and authored a handbook on Pay Equity Law as an attorney at Equal Rights Advocates in San Francisco. Ms. Stone earned her A.B. from Harvard University and J.D. from Harvard Law School.
Martina Kartman, Office & Development Assistant
Martina Kartman is an honors student pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Washington in Law, Societies & Justice and Women's Studies, with a Human Rights Minor. She has conducted field research with the UW's Guatemala Project and worked as a research assistant on human trafficking with the UW Women's Center. Martina's many volunteer activities have included serving as a mentor and tutor with the UW Dream Project and Seso Gear Up.
