Homelessness Prevention and Tenant Rights

The Housing Justice Project (HJP) is a homelessness prevention program providing accessible volunteer-based legal services to low-income tenants facing eviction in King County. While HJP assists thousands of individuals avoid eviction and keep stable housing each year, eviction hearings can often yield inconsistent and unpredictable decisions due to a lack of published opinions on many standard eviction issues.
How Washington Appleseed is Helping
The summer associate class at Davis Wright Tremaine is assisting HJP by producing a series of issue briefs on common tenant dispute issues, such as subsidized rental assistance. These issue briefs walk through question and answer on the basics of the issue they address and then offer discussion that volunteer attorneys can use to advocate on behalf of their clients. The hope is that, once armed with these briefs, advocates at HJP can more efficiently process cases and serve even more individuals.
